Pack up the kids and head to Happy Valley!

– by Ellen Matis

Happy Valley is one of those places that feels like it was made for family travel. Locals here know the joy of exploring caves, catching a Spikes game, and wandering small-town streets, and they’re happy to share these experiences with visitors. Whether your crew is into nature, art, sports, or stepping back in time, this region offers endless ways to keep everyone entertained while creating memories you’ll talk about long after you leave.

Millbrook Marsh

Start with a family favorite: Penn’s Cave & Wildlife Park in Centre Hall. There’s something magical about gliding through a cavern by boat, marveling at the rock formations and stories of the cave’s history. It’s the only all-water cavern in the U.S., and a guided boat ride reveals all its hidden nooks and crannies. Afterward, head above ground for the wildlife safari. Here, you can drive through sprawling fields where bison, elk, and wolves roam—one of those experiences that wows kids and adults alike. To make it a full weekend of “cave exploration” add in a Woodward Cave tour to walk through some big chambers underground.

In nearby Bellefonte, a stop at the Bellefonte Art Museum for Centre County is a must. This isn’t your typical museum—it’s housed in a historic building with a warm, welcoming atmosphere. There are interactive art stations for kids in partnership with The Makery, rotating exhibits to keep things fresh, and the Underground Railroad exhibit, which offers a glimpse into local history that sticks with you.

The Imagination Celebration events are especially fun for families, giving kids the chance to create their own art in a space that feels like home.

If you’re here in the summer, catching a game with the State College Spikes is a local tradition you won’t want to miss. The Spikes offer minor league baseball at its finest, with a laid-back vibe, affordable tickets, and fun activities between innings. Medlar Field comes alive on game days with themed nights and events, giving families a chance to kick back and enjoy a slice of local life, complete with popcorn, hot dogs, and plenty of cheering.

Lincoln Cavern

For those willing to take a short drive just outside Happy Valley, there are even more adventures waiting. In Huntingdon, Lincoln Caverns & Whisper Rocks offer a different underground experience, with tours that wind through awe-inspiring stalactites and stalagmites. The special flashlight and ghost tours add a bit of mystery and adventure—perfect for young explorers eager to experience something unique.

For a full day of fun, take the family to DelGrosso’s Park & Laguna Splash in Tipton. This family-owned amusement and water park is known for its classic rides, thrilling waterslides, and delicious Italian food. Kids will love the rides, while parents can relax with a plate of DelGrosso’s famous spaghetti or pizza. The park’s laid-back charm and budget-friendly pricing make it a perfect destination for families.

MUST USE

And if your family loves trains, don’t miss the East Broad Top Railroad in Rockhill Furnace. This narrow-gauge railroad offers scenic rides through the countryside, giving you a taste of a bygone era. Seasonal events, like the Polar Express ride, make it even more magical, and train enthusiasts of all ages will be captivated by the experience.

Happy Valley and its surroundings offer families a mix of excitement, wonder, and good old-fashioned fun. The local favorites here create a perfect mix of learning, adventure, and connection that makes this place feel like home — even if it’s your first time visiting.
