Ulysses Owens Jr. Big Band brings modern swing energy to Eisenhower Auditorium
This isn’t your grandfather’s setlist. The Ulysses Owens Jr. Big Band will revive the traditional jazz ensemble format with an energetic Penn State debut at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, in Eisenhower Auditorium.

While the jazz bands of the early 1900s bring to mind easy-listening supper clubs, this “high-octane” big-band ensemble, featuring the three-time Grammy Award-winning drummer Ulysses Owens Jr and up-and-coming Juilliard musicians, will celebrate the energy and artistic risk of today’s youth.
“No shade, everyone in this band is under the age of 40,” Owens said. “It’s ‘high-octane’ because it's never a dull moment. They play in a way where they are inviting you into this moment we are having, and we are having fun.”
The diverse band will play an equally varied setlist, including swing, funk, groove, rock, and some Latin works; as well as songs from the album “Soul Conversations,” which features songs by Count Basie, Duke Ellington and echoes of Maria Schneider.
“It’s engaging,” Owens said of each program. “I will build a setlist, then walk around and look at the audience and reassess the setlist. … We feed off the vibe of the audience.”
