The East Broad Top Railroad, located in the heart of Pennsylvania’s Raystown Lake Region, offers visitors a remarkably authentic glimpse into America’s industrial past. In addition to one-hour scenic train excursions, visitors also have the opportunity to tour the railroad’s belt-driven shop complex, which has been described by the Smithsonian as an “incomparable national treasure.” USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards are highly regarded for celebrating the best in travel and leisure, determined by the votes of readers who recognize excellence across various categories. Being named number three among the top ten scenic train rides is a significant achievement, placing the East Broad Top Railroad alongside some of the most iconic and beloved rail journeys in North America.
“We look forward to welcoming even more visitors to enjoy a ride on the East Broad Top,” added Esposito. “especially as we continue to grow our experience with longer rides, unique special events, and more diverse tour offerings.”
The East Broad Top Railroad was constructed in 1872 to serve the iron and coal industry in Huntingdon County. The EBT is the only original narrow-gauge railroad (rails only 3’ apart rather than the standard 4’ 8.5”) east of the Colorado Rockies. In 1956, the line closed to freight traffic and was reopened in 1960 as a steam-powered tourist attraction until its closure in 2011. In 2020, the non-profit EBT Foundation purchased the line and undertook an extensive restoration effort to bring the trains, tracks, and structures back to life. The railroad now offers scenic train rides, guided tours, special events, and more!
