Central PA’s first Indie Retailer Week celebrates local businesses

A new initiative is bringing together independent retailers across Central Pennsylvania to highlight the importance of shopping local. The first-ever Central PA Indie Retailer Week runs from March 31 through April 7 and encourages shoppers to visit at least three participating small businesses during the week.

The event, which includes retailers from Bellefonte, State College, and beyond, is designed to celebrate independent storefronts and their role in creating vibrant communities.

Staci Egan, owner of Smith + Front in Bellefonte, spearheaded the local effort after being inspired by a similar event in Lancaster.

“In a world where large corporations dominate, Indie Retailer Week shines a light on the small, independent businesses that offer unique products and personal shopping experiences,” Egan said. “It’s about more than just sales—it’s about building community and supporting each other’s success.”

A collective effort

More than a dozen local businesses have joined the initiative, offering sales, specials, and in-store experiences as a thank-you to their customers. Participating retailers include:

Shop hours vary by location; customers are encouraged to check with individual retailers before visiting.

Beyond the direct impact on sales, Indie Retailer Week is a chance for local businesses to collaborate on marketing efforts, generate buzz, and inspire future partnerships.

“As a collective, small businesses can make a bigger impact when we team up,” Egan said. “Pooling our resources—whether that’s social media promotion, shared branding materials, or just cross-promotion—helps us reach a larger audience and remind people why shopping local matters.”

More than a one-time event

While initiatives like Small Business Saturday have gained traction nationally, Egan hopes that Indie Retailer Week will reinforce the idea that supporting small businesses should be a year-round effort.

“By choosing a ‘half-birthday’ of Small Business Saturday, we’re strategically positioning this as a reminder that shopping local isn’t just a seasonal thing—it’s an everyday choice,” she said.

She also sees room for growth in the future. While initial outreach to local nonprofits didn’t gain traction, she believes that with time and visibility, more community groups and sponsors will see the value in supporting independent businesses.

“Small businesses are the backbone of any community,” Egan said. “They sponsor local events, donate to fundraisers, and create a real sense of place. When people shop local, they’re not just making a purchase—they’re investing in their community.”
