Las Cafeteras to honor Hispanic Heritage Month with free public events
Las Cafeteras, known for its protest songs and use of traditional instruments to connect cultures and generations, will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a variety of free community events starting Oct. 9.
Rights and resistance rally
From noon-1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, on the Old Main patio, members of Las Cafeteras will lead a celebration and testimonial event to the importance of Indigenous Peoples Resistance Day.
The rally will feature short performances by Akwesasne Women Singers and Las Cafeteras, and artists will share their thoughts on what it means to resist from the assembled crowd.

The Feast culinary and arts event
Join Indigenous Peoples’ Student Association, Indigenous Faculty and Staff Alliance, Hispanic Heritage Month Committee, Penn State Student Affairs and the Center for the Performing Arts in a celebration of Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
The Feast will feature performances by Las Cafeteras, Haudenosaunee Elders and Caliente Dance Company. The event will be from 7-9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, in Heritage Hall, HUB-Robeson Center. Food using indigenous recipes will be provided.

Songwriting workshop
Denise Carlos from Las Cafeteras will present “A People’s History of Music in the United States,” a discussion about how music has long been used as a tool to fight oppression and to hope for liberation. The interactive lecture will include parts of a song at the beginning of the session as a demonstration and culminating with a light writing exercise.
The free public event will be from noon-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, in Dewey Room, Pattee Library, Penn State University Libraries. Attendance will be limited to 30 people, and a light lunch will be provided. Registration is required at https://tinyurl.com/mtj75j78.

Ticketed concert event
The free events will culminate in a high-energy ticketed concert by the East Los Angeles-based band at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, in Eisenhower Auditorium.
Tickets are $38 for an adult; $24 for those 18 and younger; and $5 per University Park student. They are available for purchase online at https://tinyurl.com/3n4dfhp8. Tickets are also available by calling 814-863-0255 or in person, weekdays 10 a.m.–4 p.m., at Eisenhower Auditorium.
An informal moderated discussion will be offered one hour before the performance and is free for ticket holders. Seating for the pre-performance talk is available on a first-arrival basis.
