Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks Celebrate 20th Annual Discovery Days 2024

– by Guest Writers

The tradition of fascinating, educating and inspiring guests of all ages at Lincoln Caverns & Whisper Rocks, near Huntingdon and Raystown Lake, began 93 years ago on June 25, 1931.

Lincoln Caverns

Originally developed by the farmer who owned the land on which the caverns were discovered, the cave was for sale after one year of operation. Myron Dunlavy, Sr. of Buffalo, NY was traveling the northeastern US looking for a cave to buy! His interest was in entertainment and the underground world, a love he developed while exploring caves in Southern Indiana as a young adult. When he happened upon the recently developed ‘Hi-Way-May Caverns,’ on the new US Route 22 in Huntingdon County, PA, he found his cave and fulfilled his dream. His lease/purchase agreement with the original developers began in June 1932. In 1937 when Myron became owner, the name was changed to Lincoln Caverns and remains so today.

Myron Dunlavy, Jr., Myron Sr.’s son, discovered the awe-inspiring Whisper Rocks in September 1941, ten years after the discovery of Lincoln Caverns and just months before the start of World War II. This cave has been protected and preserved by four generations of the Dunlavy family and shared with guests since the early 1960s. The two-cave tour is enjoyed by visitors from around the world every year.

This June the Lincoln Caverns’ family continues the tradition of celebrating four generations of Dunlavy family legacy with the 20th edition of Discovery Days on Saturday and Sunday, June 22 and 23, 2024, 9 AM – 5 PM each day. What started out as a 75th Anniversary celebration is now an annual event, held on the weekend in June closest to the opening of Hi-Way-May Caverns as a show cave, on June 25, 1931. As an added treat, ECHO THE BAT, Lincoln Caverns’ mascot, joins the family at Discovery Days, 12 – 3 PM both Saturday and Sunday, with photo ops and gifts for all our young visitors.
